Biography from the dust jacket of
Broken Dragons (Crime & corruption in today's China)
"Bruce Dalbrack has lived and worked in Hong Kong for a dozen years. Originally from Edinburgh he travelled widely in China and Asia after finishing a PhD in psychology from the University of St Andrews, Scotland."
Why BruceDalbrack.com?
Part diary, part archive, part muse. A bit of everything then. One big hope is to clarify thoughts and positions in writing and see if they bear scrutiny. It's not about convincing anyone of anything if they don't want to believe me. Things which once sounded odd may turn out to be true and meticulous research can look misjudged later. But either way having it in black-and-white on BruceDalbrack.com helps.
Why do you have ads on your website?
A few questions were raised about this, and some eyebrows too. No ads appeared on the website for the first couple of years so adding them is not about money. This website isn’t about profit and that's not changed. What little money trickles in from readers clicking on ads goes to charity. Rather, ads help content. At least so far it seems Google adverts are capable of spotting what a page is about and adding in relevant or curious links.
Opinion
Some ask for summaries of where I stand. That sounds like a magnificent way to tempt grievances! But it has been requested more than once so here's a try to cook up a basic recipe.
Mostly my opinions arise from boiled down econometrics or other statistical analysis but seasoned with a generous crust of history and psychology. Politically I am centre-left, usually, but not always. In the Kamber-O'Leary politics test I score 19/40. That places me just about exactly in the middle between super-liberal (0/40) or super-conservative (40/40). Other people who scored like me were Colin Powell or Bill Clinton. The quiz is specific to America but non-Americans can still take it here.
Economically? Pro-fair trade and shareholder capitalism yet with dollops of reservations when it comes to the developing world. Republicanism (the non-monarchist kind, not the American political party) and multiculturalism and secularism. And for dessert some rugby in front of the fire. And if that doesn't rise into generous helpings of Dalbrack fudge may I take it all back?
